Checks to do

Before your MOT

Lights

19%

Check your lights: But do it properly – have someone operate your lights while you check each one, and then reverse the roles. Make sure you test all lights and indicators including full /dipped beams and hazards

Suspension

12%

This is more complex than checking your lights but by paying attention to your car when manoeuvring bumps and listening without the stereo on may give you an inkling. Push your car up and down around each wheel to see if the shock absorbers are springing back as they should.

Brakes

10%

How responsive are your brakes… is your handbrake lacking tension? Loose and unresponsive may mean these need attention… a mechanic will most likely need to be consulted.

Tyres

8%

It’s not just tyre tread that is a requirement by law… tyre pressure needs to be adhered to. Keeping the right tyre pressure means you could be more fuel economical too. Check your tread with a method called the 20 pence tyre check – click here for more info

Windscreen/Wipers

8%

Damaged windscreens should be treated where: its 10mm or above in the drivers’ central view or 40mm in the whole of the swept area. If in doubt get it checked – most policies have glass cover. So you may only have an excess to pay

Exhaust

5%

Is your exhaust noisy or leaking fluids? Exhaust fumes can be dangerous, so check at normal temperatures, outdoors or in a well-ventilated space. As always try and get any work done before the MOT.

Other checks include:

Fluids: Brake fluid, oil and washer levels need to be topped up

General Conditions: Seatbelts, mirrors and fuel cap(s) etc should be in a good state and operational.

Electronic Warning Lights: “Speedo” and handbrake lights
